Revelstoke, BC, Canada

Revelstoke, BC Canada - August 8, 2011

The most memorable part of the trip to Revelstoke was the trip itself, because there is not much in Revelstoke, except an RV park to rest our weary bones.

On the way there was more spectacular mountain scenery.

There was also a double spiral tunnel that allows trains to change elevation up a mountainside without incurring high track grade levels that would be required without the tunnels dug through the mountain on a slower uphill grade level.

We waited for about 30 minutes to be able to see a long train enter the spiral tunnel, and watch the engine come out the exit of the tunnel while the remainder of the train is still entering the spiral entrance. Alas, 30 minutes was not enough of a wait, since no trains came by, so I didn’t get the neat picture of the back of the train still entering and the tunnel and at the same time see the engine exiting the tunnel 40-50 feet further up (or down) the hill.

Not the easiest thing to explain, so here is their diagram of how it works.

The diagram shows the engine exiting the tunnel at a level 40-50 feet above where the caboose is still entering the entrance of the tunnel.

Here is the picture of the tunnel entrance and exit (without the train because none came by while we were there)…  just so you can see the actual tunnel ends (see the arrows) and see that the track crosses over itself  at a higher level..

There was a pretty moon-set over the mountains when we got to our RV Park, so I got a nice image of that..

Time for bed…..  I told you there was nothing at Revelstoke to show you.
